Platforms Learning event 'ConneXions17' - September 2017, Nairobi - Kenya

The Gavi CSO Constituency, with the support of CRS, held its first learning event in Nairobi, Kenya from 19th – 21st, September 2017.

The event brought together 70 participants from 26 civil society platforms across Africa, Asia and the Region of the Americas, and 35 global and regional representatives from the CSO Constituency, Gavi Secretariat colleagues, and immunisation-related subject matter experts drawn from Advocacy Accelerators, American Red Cross, Glaxo Smith Kline, the Kenyan Ministry of Health and local UNICEF and WHO representatives.

Drawing on lessons learnt from five years of implementation, the event provided an opportunity for sharing success stories and promising practices around the contributions of coordinated civil society engagement to creating sustainable linkages between communities and policy-making processes. CSO platforms were able to exchange information, strengthen partnerships with Gavi, the Gavi CSO Constituency, and peer CSO platforms around the world, as well as strengthen their knowledge and skills in key technical areas related to health system strengthening (HSS), platform governance and immunization.

The substance of the event focused on discussing stakeholder engagement in immunisation programs, creating political will and advocacy, CSO engagement in HSS, and gender considerations in immunization programming, amongst others.
Gavi-supported CSO platforms also set up booths to showcase their work and discuss innovative approaches with other attendees, many of whom were from neighbouring countries with similar immunisation and health system challenges.

The event was declared a success by participants, who eagerly await the next opportunity to come together and learn from each other and Gavi partners!
