International Paediatric Association (IPA) and the Union of National African Paediatric Societies and Associations (UNAPSA)

Dr. Esangbedo received her undergraduate medical education at the Medical School of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, her paediatric residency training at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos Nigeria, and Fellowship training in Paediatric Endocrinology at the Children’s Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri, USA. Dorothy has served in various capacities at the national level including membership on the National Committee on Women and Children (1990-1992), Co-Chairman of the 1st National Vaccine Summit in Nigeria (2012), membership of the National Expert Committee on Adverse Events from Immunisation (2014 to date), and she was recently appointed into the National Immunisation Technical Advisory Group, Nigeria (NITAG) (2015). She is the immediate Past President of the Paediatric Association of Nigeria (2010 – 2013), and the incumbent President of the Union of National African Paediatric Societies and Associations (UNAPSA).

 

The IPA came into existence in 1910 and has since evolved into a non-government organisation with membership from Regional Paediatric societies, 140 National Paediatric Societies and Associations, International Paediatric Specialty Societies and the World Federation of Associations of Paediatric Surgeons. The daily focus of the IPA is mobilisation of paediatricians for advocacy on key child health issues in collaboration with WHO, UNICEF and other global organisations with the aim of encouraging key policies and interventions that protect and promote child survival and development. Advocacy for childhood Immunisation is one of the key areas of IPA intervention for which there is the IPA Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (TAGI), and a large group of IPA Immunisation Champions. The Union of National African Paediatric Societies and Associations (UNAPSA) is one of the regional members of the IPA. The members of UNAPSA are national societies and associations in 38 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Advocacy on reaching every child with comprehensive immunisation is a key area of focus of UNAPSA in collaboration with the IPA.
